Santa Maria Maggiore
Walking route to Via Marghera 37.
Walk from Santa Maria Maggiore ↗After one of Rome’s four major papal basilicas, a Roman kitchen open all day about 900 metres away: a twelve-minute walk through Termini station.

From the basilica square walk down Via Daniele Manin to Termini station, cross the station concourse and leave on the Via Marsala side: Via Marghera 37 is about a hundred metres from there. In total it is about 900 metres, twelve minutes on foot on OpenStreetMap’s walking route.
If you prefer to stay outdoors you can also walk around the station; the time is much the same. The up-to-date route from where you are is in the link below.

Many visitors see the basilica in the morning and then look for lunch without heading back to the centre. La Lupa’s kitchen opens at 12:00 and does not close in the afternoon, so if your visit runs long a plate of pasta at 3:30 pm is no problem. In the evening the dining room stays open until 23:00.
For a first taste of Rome: carbonara, amatriciana or cacio e pepe, then saltimbocca or grilled lamb chops. Or the €30 La Lupa set menu, from starter to dessert.

Santa Maria Maggiore’s official site indicates no ticket to enter the basilica: it sells tickets only for the museum areas (the Museum, the Loggia of the Blessings with the façade mosaic, the Hall of the Popes and Bernini’s staircase), open Monday to Saturday 8:00–18:30 with last entry at 18:00, and Sunday 12:30–17:00 (museum opening hours).
Coming off a train, two rules matter: suitcases, large bags and large backpacks are not allowed inside and there is no cloakroom (visitor rules). Leave them first at the Ki-Point left luggage in Termini station, by platform 24, open 7:00–21:00 according to RFI. Dress modestly too: no sleeveless or low-cut tops, no shorts above the knee, miniskirts or hats.
Weekday Masses are in the Pauline Chapel at 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 18; on Sundays at 7, 8 and 9 in the Pauline Chapel and at 10, 12 and 18 at the papal altar (the basilica’s schedule). After your visit La Lupa is about 900 metres away: the kitchen opens at 12:00 and stays open until 23:00. More places on foot, with hours and tickets, in our guide to things to see near Termini.
